Hi Teacher Papol,

May I know your thoughts about the Kumon method of learning? My wife and I are thinking whether our 9-year-old son will benefit greatly from it should we decide to enrol him.

We’d really appreciate your honest response.

Thanks.

Hello Mr. Timbungco!

Thanks for visiting my site. :)

As far as I know, Kumon focuses on enriching Math and Reading skills. If these are things that your child needs help with, Kumon might be good. I have relatives and friends who availed of the program and they turned out quite well on those two subjects. I’d like to stress though that there is such a thing as overstimulation, meaning too much focus on academics (workbooks, pen and paper exercises, etc.) could easily tire the child and instill a not-so-positive regard towards school work. Ensuring that your child gets a balanced exposure to other activities such as sports, play and socialization will be of great help to avoid this.

Finally, Kumon and other kinds of enrichment programs (like tutorials) are only supplements to existing school work. I believe that parents know their kids best. Please consider your child’s other needs, existing skills and learning style before deciding to enroll him in any program.

I hope this helps!
Happy Summer! :)
